The Dragonet Prophecy is the first book in the New York Times bestselling series Wings of Fire. The main protagonist is Clay. The book was officially released in the United States on July 1st, 2012.[1]

The Dragonet Prophecy is preceded by Deserter, Dragonslayer, and Assassin. It is succeeded by The Lost Heir.

Summary[]

The dragonets are coming... to save the day.

Clay has lived his whole life under the mountain. The MudWing dragonet knows that war is raging between the dragon tribes in the world outside - a war that he and four other dragonets are destined to end, according to the mysterious prophecy they've been taught. The five "chosen" dragonets were stolen from their homes while they were still in their eggs - and hidden away for years - all to fulfill the Prophecy.

But not every dragonet wants a destiny. And when danger threatens one of their own, Clay and his friends may choose freedom over fate... leave the mountain... and set the dragon world on a course no one could have predicted.

Quote on Back of Hardcover[]

"Leave?" Clay echoed, startled. "How? On our own?"

"Why not?" Tsunami said. "If we can find a way out — why should we have to wait another two years? I'm ready to save the world now, aren't you?"

"We can't stop the war by ourselves," he said. "We wouldn't know where to start."

Still, part of him couldn't help imagining what it would be like to go home now. Back to the marshes, to the swamps, to a whole tribe of MudWings who looked like him and thought like him… back to his parents, whoever they were…

What if they could do it?

What if they could escape, and survive, and save the world…their own way?

Dedication[]

For Jonah, my little bigwings.

Plot[]

Prologue[]

Hvitur, an IceWing in the Talons of Peace, attempted to steal a large SkyWing egg from Queen Scarlet's palace for the prophecy during a storm. However, he was captured by Scarlet's ally, Burn, who was one of the three contenders for the SandWing throne. Burn realized that he was a member of the Talons of Peace, and the stolen egg was of the SkyWing Dragonet from the Dragonet Prophecy. She dropped the egg off a cliff, supposedly ruining the prophecy. She then killed Hvitur by shredding his wings and stabbing him through his skull with her venomous tail. She threw his corpse off the cliff and flew away, wanting to kill something else.

Sometime later, Kestrel, a member of the Talons of Peace, found Hvitur's body and the shattered egg. She recovered the eggshell and brought it back to a cave underneath an unknown mountain in the Claws of the Clouds Mountains. She informed Webs, another member of the Talons of Peace, of the egg's destruction and Hvitur's death. Webs told her that Asha, the member who delivered the MudWing egg, had also died. Kestrel got frustrated and said they should just break all the eggs they had and run away before the rest of the Talons of Peace came for the dragonets of destiny. Webs disagreed with her and insisted that they needed a fifth dragonet. Kestrel told him that the SkyWing palace hatchery would be heavily guarded by now, and it would be foolish to go running back for another egg. Webs instead went to find a RainWing egg to replace the SkyWing egg while Kestrel griped about it not being a SkyWing.

=== Part One: Under the Mountain ===
The main timeline began six years later, with Clay, the MudWing dragonet of destiny, reflecting on his position and importance he thought he could never have. However, he did this during a training battle with the infamously grumpy Kestrel. The SkyWing taunted him and pinned him down. Before she could do any more harm to him, the SeaWing dragonet, Tsunami, bit Kestrel's tail, yanking out a scale. After the SkyWing left the cave, Tsunami proceeded to shove Clay into the freezing river and reflected on their desire to leave the cave to make their own life. Tsunami then proposed and discussed the idea of leaving the mountain early with Clay.

Proceeding to study with Sunny, the odd-looking SandWing dragonet, Clay met with Starflight, the NightWing from the prophecy, and Glory, a RainWing who substituted for the dead SkyWing, along with Tsunami, in the study cave. The group began to play out the death of Queen Oasis at the hands of a scavenger. They split the decision of Burn, Blister, and Blaze for the position of next SandWing queen, and finally, the allegiances. Kestrel interrupted this, then rudely insulted them and called Tsunami out as the ringleader. That night, they learnt of the upcoming arrival of Morrowseer, the NightWing who wrote the prophecy.

Clay and Tsunami, the only two able to stay in the underground river for extended periods due to their tribes' natural abilities, overheard this information by sneaking closer through the underwater lake. Morrowseer arrived the following day, and as he inspected them, he angrily called out Glory for not being a SkyWing, deeming her unworthy. Tsunami began to complain about how the dragonets of destiny were treated, and Morrowseer attacked her for her impudence, and Clay and Sunny leapt into action to help her, prompting him to see them as acceptable.

Both Glory and Starflight stayed idle during the fight. However, Morrowseer called Starflight to have a private audience. The two left, and the guardians turned on Tsunami, angrily yelling at her. After Starflight returned, Clay spoke to him, noting his reluctance. Clay then overheard Sunny's yell and saw Tsunami being chained. After Morrowseer and the guardians exit the cavern, she tells him to spy on the guardians. He overheard their plot to kill Glory to appease Morrowseer. After much thought, the group frantically decided to send Clay down the underground river to escape to the outside and return to free them by unlocking the cave entrance.

Acting on advice from Starflight, he managed to get into a cavern full of glowworms, which he, for a moment, mistook for stars. He heard roaring past the calm pool as he stepped out of the water, finding a stream. When Clay tried to follow the stream, he came into contact with a white substance that started to poison and dissolve his scales. He hit something and was knocked unconscious but was later roused by Tsunami, who managed to get free and heard his screams, cleansing him of the substance.

When he asked her how she escaped the chains, Tsunami remarked to him that Sunny and Starflight had melted them. Then, the duo cascaded over a waterfall. Clay noticed Tsunami's inability to fly from her dislocated wing due to her escape from the chains, and he saved her from falling to her death. He then had his first experience with mud, realizing its healing qualities to him, and he relocated Tsunami's wing. The pair then encounter a scavenger with treasure, who was then killed by Queen Scarlet.

The queen of the SkyWings then asked them why they were together and called Tsunami a spy. She asked them to return to her palace with her. Then, with a nod from Clay, Tsunami impaled Scarlet's tail with the scavenger's sword to the ground to escape, and they fled towards the peaks. Afterward, they saw the smoke signal from the other dragonets to locate the caverns they were trapped in and go to rescue them. However, the signal also attracted Scarlet, and the entire group (except Dune, who was killed by Queen Scarlet, and Webs, who had escaped) was taken hostage by the SkyWings.

Part Two: In the Sky Kingdom[]

The prisoners' layout had them chained to rock spires in a circle over the arena. On Clay's second day, an unusual female dragonet dropped a charred piece of prey in front of him. Disgusted by the memory of Dune's snapped neck, he threw up over the edge, which to his surprise, the female dragonet laughed at. She asked him if he would eat, matter-of-factly commenting that she did not want him to die before she had a chance to kill him. She told him that because the SkyWings and MudWings are allies, she had not fought a MudWing before, and the NightWing would be the most "blazing" to fight. She then informed him that her name was Peril, and she was the queen's champion, and pointed out Tsunami and Starflight. Clay was on the opposite side of Starflight, with Tsunami in between them along the circle. He then realized that Sunny and Glory were not held in the arena. Clay told her that if she asked Starflight for information about any history, he will not stop talking. She took the joke seriously and flew off to ask Starflight.

The following day, Peril went into the arena, and she faced off against a SandWing named Horizon. Scarlet then revealed Glory, who was chained to a tree, with her scales brightly changing colors in the sunlight. She was being treated gently and with care — but as a piece of art, not as a dragon. Clay was forced to watch as just a simple touch from Peril menacingly burnt Horizon. He worried about eventually having to face Peril, now knowing she had fire in her claws. In the end, Horizon threw himself onto Peril for a quick death.

That night, Peril returned. She told him the story of having too much fire: how she killed her brother, and how her mother abandoned her. Clay was terrified to learn that Starflight was next in line to fight and he told Peril to make it sound as if she has the idea to put Clay in his place. After much resentment, Peril agreed. In the morning, guards escort him, Tsunami, and Starflight to Scarlet's throne room, and she asked which one of them could fight against an IceWing. Clay denounced Tsunami and Starflight, so Queen Scarlet put him in the arena to fight. He was pitted against an IceWing named Fjord. The fight officially began, and Clay attempted to convince him he did not have to fight. Fjord attacked, ignoring him.

Using SkyWing tactics learned from Kestrel, Clay surprised Fjord. However, he was soon pinned and had acquired a frostbreath wound on his wing, and Fjord was about to spray a blast of frostbreath on Clay. In an attempt to get into the arena and help, Tsunami threw herself off of the edge of her rock spire, nearly strangling herself and pulling many other prisoners off. As everyone was distracted, a jet of unknown black substance splattered on Fjord's face and neck, melting his scales and killing him within moments. Clay was declared the victor, taken away, re-chained, and once again confronted by Peril.

Peril decided to tell Clay where Sunny was if he would do something for her. Clay agreed, and Peril told Clay that Sunny was perfectly fine. Peril told Clay that he had to let her hide behind him during a trial because Scarlet would not let her go. He agreed and then realized that the trial was Kestrel's, and that Kestrel could be Peril's mother. He feared what Kestrel would do when she realizes her daughter was not dead. The following day, Scarlet and two dragons, Osprey and Vermilion, host Kestrel's trial. Scarlet was biased for Vermilion's side, the prosecution. He explained that Scarlet gave an order, Kestrel disobeyed, and fled the Sky Kingdom. However, Osprey told the real story. In reality, Kestrel was a loyal soldier and was ordered to join the breeding program, yielding an egg with two dragonets inside. One, Peril, had taken all the fire from the other, who was later revealed to be Sky. As of SkyWing customs, Kestrel was ordered to kill both and leave the breeding program for the remainder of her life. Kestrel had tried to escape with the two dragonets only to be caught by Scarlet at Diamond Spray River. Scarlet explained that Kestrel would have a chance to live if she killed one of her dragonets. Kestrel chose the male dragonet to "kill" and did it with her claws, but Queen Scarlet changed her mind. Kestrel tried to escape with Peril but was burned by touch and was forced to flee without her. Clay realized this was the cause of Kestrel's burn scars on her palms.

Peril launched herself into the arena, defending Kestrel with the Champion's Shield, a tradition that allowed her to stand in for the prisoner by fighting a combatant in the arena. Scarlet figured out that Osprey had educated Peril of the Champion's Shield since Peril could not hold scrolls due to her firescales. Scarlet, angered, picked Osprey up and dropped him from the sky. Since he could not fly due to his paralyzed tail, he died. Peril attempted to save him but realized she could not because her firescales would kill him anyway. After Osprey's death, Scarlet dismissed Peril. That night, Burn arrived to collect Sunny for her weirdling tower and celebrate Scarlet's hatching day. In a futile attempt to communicate with Peril, Clay used a wire she burned through to start playing a song: The Dragonets' Song. Soon, all the prisoners in the arena had begun to sing and play. Scarlet, angered, took him, Tsunami, and Starflight into Peril's room and made Peril leave the room. Scarlet placed a line of rocks and lit them on fire, creating a barrier of fire to prevent the dragonets from escaping. Then, Starflight noticed Peril and the dragonets used her to escape the room. On the way out, they noticed Sunny over the main hall. However, Peril betrayed them, leading Scarlet to them. Clay accidentally touched Peril, thus figuring out he was immune to fire due to the blood egg. The SkyWing queen took them back, and Starflight explained Clay's immunity.

The following day, Tsunami was taken into the arena, and Clay and Starflight were taken to Scarlet's balcony. Tsunami faced off against an insane SeaWing prisoner, Gill, and pinned him down, explaining that she won without killing him. Queen Scarlet mocked her, saying that she was too scared of fighting and war, and Tsunami snapped Gill's neck in retaliation. Starflight was next to fight against Tsunami, but the two refused to fight. Then, they were forced to face scavengers. Two of the four scavengers were killed, and Scarlet brought forward her IceWing prisoners. However, Morrowseer arrived with NightWing soldiers, killing the IceWings, and then took away Starflight. Scarlet, enraged, finally placed Clay against Peril. Caught off guard by Clay's immunity, Peril was quickly pinned. Scarlet shouted, "Use your venom! That was thrilling, and I didn't even get to see it last time!" Then, Glory reared up, broke free of the tree, and spat venom at Burn, who shoved Scarlet in front of her. The venom hit Scarlet's face, melting it, and all the dragons at the arena fled in terror.

In the pandemonium, Clay, Tsunami, Glory, and Peril managed to escape into the main hall. On the way, Clay helped a scavenger climbing a cliff, which was later revealed to be Leaf. At the main hall, they got Peril to melt through the bars on Sunny's cage. An argument ensued about saving Kestrel, with Clay, Peril, and Sunny voting yes. When Kestrel was rescued, they proceeded to escape after a face off with several guards, and Kestrel informed them of where their eggs were taken from. Then, after Kestrel flew off, Clay, Tsunami, Glory, and Sunny decided to swim towards the Mud Kingdom, where Clay expected to find his family.

Part Three: An Egg the Color of Dragon Blood[]

Clay, Tsunami, Glory, and Sunny used their camouflage skills to glide down the river. As they came to a waterfall, they overlooked a recent battlefield covered with the remains of MudWings and IceWings and then disappear into the Mud Kingdom. Clay and Glory went on, with Sunny and Tsunami staying behind. They encountered a troop of MudWings battle training, and Clay found his mother, Cattail. She indifferently told them that she did not care; she sold him to the Talons of Peace for at least two cows.

Crushed, Clay leaves, and he and Glory encountered his siblings, who explain who he was and why he attacked the eggs at hatching (Apparently, he was not attacking them. It was the MudWing instinct of helping a bigwing's siblings out of their shells). At peace with himself, he left. Then Clay, Tsunami, Glory, and Sunny were met by Starflight, who explained that Queen Coral would be excited to meet her daughter, Tsunami, by the Kingdom of the Sea.

Epilogue[]

That night, Morrowseer, Blister, and Kestrel met on a small rocky island on Bay of a Thousand Scales in the Kingdom of the Sea. There, Morrowseer told Blister of his plan to use Starflight as an agent to convince the other dragonets that they should choose her to be the new SandWing queen. Kestrel asked what they were talking about, as she could not hear them over the howling wind. They did not reply, and Blister then questioned Kestrel's attendance. Kestrel responded that Morrowseer said the dragonets were in danger. He then implied that it was a plot to get her to come to the island and then stated that she had failed him. Kestrel attempted to argue, saying that she worked for the Talons of Peace and not Morrowseer. However, she was soon killed by Blister and pushed over the cliffside. After discarding Kestrel, Morrowseer informed Blister to eliminate Webs. The book ended when Blister commanded Morrowseer to find the dragonets and bring them to her, saying that they would both get what they want if he did.

Limited Edition[]

A collector's edition of The Dragonet Prophecy with new cover art and exclusive content will release on September 3rd, 2024.[2]

Mistakes[]

  • IceWings are described as having "silver scales like the moon"[3] even though there are three moons.[4]
  • When Vermilion announced Gill's arrival onto the battlefield, his dialogue said "Gill of the Seawings" instead of "Gill of the SeaWings."[5]
  • Kestrel's tongue is described as forked,[6] but SkyWings do not have forked tongues.[7]
  • The term hands was used instead of talons.[8]

Trivia[]

  • Tui knew from book one that the NightWings had lost their powers because she wanted the prophecy to be fake.[event 1]
  • On the pre-final cover of The Dragonet Prophecy, Scarlet's Arena is shown to the right on the front. However, this was later removed for the final printing.[9]
