The abyss is a deep pit located underneath Lake Scorpion near the abyss village. It served as the location of Cottonmouth's throne room and the brain of the othermind.
Description[]
The abyss is deep and dark, described as the deepest[1] and creepiest place in the world.[2] It used to have a dim green glow[3] and whispers coming from within it that were loud enough to be heard in the abyss village.[4] The cave around the abyss is an echoing cavern with stalactites overhead[5] and a boulder covered plateau that overlooks the jagged pit.[2] The abyss feels endless[6] and the green glow was blinding the further down the pit went. At the bottom of the abyss, there was a morass of thick vines wound together with sticky sap, wicked thorns, and jagged leaves[7] that gave off a phosphorescent light along with the moist, mossy coated walls before Luna destroyed the breath of evil plant.[8]
An opening in the vines led to a dark, chilly, square, throne room with smooth, flat stone walls, four matching columns, and a throne up against the far end.[9] The thone room has a floor of rich dirt that used to be covered entirely by plants.[10] Before Luna destroyed the othermind, a thick plant stem rose from the pedestal of the throne where it grew through Cottonmouth's and Freedom's skulls that split and clammered across the walls;[11] however, all of the vines decayed after the roots were dug out and burned.[12]
History[]
The Lost Continent Prophecy[]
The Dangerous Gift[]
The abyss first appeared in the vision Snowfall had of Raven where she spoke with Mole about how the abyss was acting strange.
In the epilogue, Raven visited Vole at the abyss where he explained that the abyss demanded a dragon.
The Flames of Hope[]
In the prologue, Raven described how her village used to worship the abyss and would sacrifice a human to be its guardian. She then enlisted Mole to help her find a dragon for the abyss.
Later in the novel, Luna, Tau, Cricket, Bryony, Bullfrog, Sky, Wren, Axolotl, and Dusky were attempting to find the abyss village when Raven and Mole abducted Dusky in order to use him to bait a dragon into coming to the abyss. When Vole took Dusky down into the abyss, Luna followed and they found themselves in Cottonmouth's throne room. After getting attached to the breath of evil, Luna and Dusky were shown the throne room within the abyss as it was when Cottonmouth was alive and while they were in the mindspace, they physically remained within the abyss.
After Luna severed the vines and burned the roots of the breath of evil, she and Dusky were able to escape the abyss.
