Axolotl is a non-binary human who was introduced in The Flames of Hope. With the help of Wren, they directed Luna and her group to the abyss. They currently reside within the LeafSilk Kingdom, studying Dragon with Cricket.

Axolotl is pale, with a thatch of dark hair on their head.

Axolotl is like a human version of Cricket, both having an obsession with dragon books.

The Flames of Hope

Axolotl was first seen observed by part of the stealth team (Luna, Cricket, Bullfrog, Sky, and Wren) trying to read a dragon book in the cavern. When they left, Wren followed and returned to the group after a couple of minutes. She told Sky and the others about the cavern and Axolotl and that Axolotl was similar to Sage, another non-binary individual. When Axolotl appeared in the cavern for the third time (three days after Luna's group entered the Pantalan caverns), the IceWing gift of stealth turned the dragons and Wren all visible again. Axolotl panicked and tried to run away before they were trapped by Bullfrog. Wren calmed Axolotl down, in human, then convinced Bullfrog, in Dragon, to release Axolotl. As soon as they were released, Axolotl stood up and began to speak to Wren and Sky about taking them to the abyss. They left with the stealth team and guided them to the village that worshipped an abyss in exchange for translating the dragon book for them. While they were leading the others to the abyss, Axolotl also began to pick up on some of the dragon language. Axolotl was with the group when they encountered Pokeweed, who asked if he could eat either Wren or Axolotl. In the cave where the refugees from the hives were staying, a group of dragonets started arguing over who would get to keep Axolotl as a pet. Sky and Wren told the dragonets that Axolotl might be their friend, but not their pet. Multiple times after that, Luna thought of Axolotl. While Luna was stuck in the abyss, Wren taught Axolotl more words in Dragon, and by the time Luna, Dusky, and Vole came back out of the abyss, Axolotl could speak in a near perfect dragon accent. They greeted Luna, saying 'fire friend', and walked with them out of the caves.

In the epilogue of the book, Axolotl arrived in the LeafSilk Kingdom, with Blue, Cricket, Katydid and Malachite. Axolotl was revealed to be staying with Cricket for a while, as they continued to study Dragon.
