"I will not have our tribe suffer the fate of the Kingdom of Sand. There will be no War of IceWing Succession. Do you three understand me?"
— Glacier to Crystal, Mink, and Snowfall, The Dangerous Gift

Glacier was an adult female IceWing who was introduced in the epilogue of The Dark Secret. Before falling victim to the fatal IceWing plague caused by Darkstalker, Glacier ruled as the queen of the IceWing tribe and was allied with Blaze and the SandWings during the War of SandWing Succession.

Description[]

Glacier had white scales and arctic-blue eyes.[1] She was tall[1] and was described by Winter to be huge, majestic, and the most beautiful and imposing queen in Pyrrhia.[2]

Personality[]

Glacier was was often internally exhausted, frustrated, confused, and uncertain by the duties of being queen,[3] but was dedicated to taking good care of her tribe[4] and was regarded as a good queen by her subjects.[5] She was brilliant[6] and unafraid,[7] and was often away from the Ice Kingdom on diplomatic missions or battle patrols for the sake of her tribe's safety.[8] On her deathbed, her highest priority was her tribe's safety, as she handpicked Snowfall to be her successor in order to ensure that a War of IceWing Succession would not occur. She was proud of and cared for all three of her daughters, Crystal, Snowfall, and Mink, stating she would happily step aside instead of fighting them for the throne.[3]

Glacier was practical and stoic in decision-making.[9] She was straight to business without any meandering preambles,[10] but had sympathy in her eyes before Winter went to face the Diamond Trial.[2] She was willing to kill any dragons who were a threat to her kingdom, and had no objection to wiping out the entire NightWing tribe if she needed to.[11]

Jerboa III described her as different from other Pyrrhian queens, as she believed in solving her own problems and understood the dangers of overusing animus magic.[12] She was adept at putting clues together and figuring things out.[11]

Biography[]

The Dragonet Prophecy[]

The Hidden Kingdom
Glacier and her troops approached the cave where the dragonets of destiny were temporarily occupying within the Ice Kingdom's border. Blaze told the dragonets that one time a SkyWing nearly killed her when she was getting some sun, and Glacier ripped the SkyWing's wings off before killing him. Blaze encouraged the dragonets to stay and meet Glacier, but they left because they did not want to be imprisoned again, as it meant possibly dying from the sub-zero temperatures in the dungeons.
The Dark Secret
In the epilogue, Glacier met with Blaze outside of her palace to talk about the dragonets of destiny. She threatened to kill the dragonets if they did not choose Blaze as the next SandWing queen, since that would demoralize her dragons. She then said she had no problem with wiping out all of the NightWings when Blaze mentioned that Deathbringer tried to kill her during the meeting with the dragonets of destiny. Blaze then started shivering, and Glacier let her go back inside. Glacier planned to talk to the dragonets and see which queen they were inclined to support, and if they did not choose Blaze, she would kill them.
The Brightest Night
In order to gather all three of the SandWing sisters together, the dragonets of destiny needed to contact Blaze in the Ice Kingdom. The dragonets decided to send Jambu and Mangrove over, disguised as IceWings, to contact Blaze. This plan failed however, due to Glacier not allowing Blaze to go out of the palace. Afterwards, the dragonets decided to dreamvisit Blaze herself, which had succeeded. Glacier later was present when the dragonets attempted to choose a SandWing queen. After Burn's death, Blister challenged Blaze to a duel. Blaze begged Glacier to fight for her, but told Blaze that this was her fight. Glacier did not love the idea of neighboring a kingdom ruled by Blister, but she did wanted to be just and fair, and apologized to Blaze, saying that it was her fight. Glacier, along with the other queens, were relieved when Thorn became the new queen of the SandWings.

The Jade Mountain Prophecy[]

Moon Rising
Winter mentioned Glacier often, especially when telling other dragons that he was her nephew. After Peril was allowed to stay at Jade Mountain Academy, Icicle told Winter that she would send a messenger to Glacier to give her the news. During the assembly after the explosion at the history cave, Icicle wanted to inform her parents and Glacier about how the school was nothing but a waste of her time. Later on, while holding Starflight hostage, Winter warned Icicle that if she killed him, Glacier may not accept her back into the Ice Kingdom. This made Icicle wonder if Glacier would seek to get rid of her so that she would not be a threat to her or her daughters. She then reassured herself, thinking that Glacier would welcome her as a hero should she succeed in freeing Hailstorm.
Winter Turning
She was seen flying back to the IceWing palace after meeting with Glory to discuss Icicle's fate. Once Winter and Hailstorm returned to the kingdom, Winter was placed at the top of the First Circle and Hailstorm in the last spot of the Seventh Circle. Because Hailstorm's seventh hatching day was only two weeks away, he had to reach the First or Second Circle beforehand if he wanted to stay in the palace. To reclaim his rank, he challenged Winter to the Diamond Trial. On the way to the Diamond Caves, Glacier asked for Winter's side of the story after hearing Icicle's. Glacier only interrupted Winter's story once to ask about Cirrus, then wished both Winter and Hailstorm luck during the Diamond Trial.
Escaping Peril
When Qibli objected that they should give Darkstalker's scroll to Thorn, Winter snapped that maybe they should give it to Glacier instead. When Qibli later suggested they could use the scroll to protect Glory and Thorn, Winter growled that they should protect Glacier as well, as she was a good queen.
Talons of Power

When Darkstalker challenged Glory for the NightWing throne, Turtle tried to empathize with the NightWings by wondering whether he would choose Albatross or Glacier to rule the SeaWings. He later wondered if Glacier, along with the other queens, would listen to him.

She was mentioned in the epilogue when a messenger arrived with some news Hailstorm, delivering a message saying that Glacier was the first dragon to catch the plague that was spreading across the Ice Kingdom, and that she was dead.
Darkness of Dragons
Glacier was briefly mentioned when Darkstalker pulled out a scroll and enchanted it to tell him news about the IceWings. The scroll announced that Glacier was dead and her daughter, Snowfall, had taken the throne. Snowfall was leading an army to avenge Glacier and the other nineteen dragons known to have been killed by the plague.

The Lost Continent Prophecy[]

The Hive Queen
In the prologue, she was mentioned by Moon, when she recounts the bad deeds Darkstalker did that she could have stopped. She said that if she had seen Darkstalker for who he really was, he would not have killed the IceWing queen.
The Poison Jungle
In the epilogue, Jerboa III mentioned Glacier, stating to Snowfall that she had usually arrived at their meetings after she did. When Jerboa said this, Snowfall quivered, which made Jerboa think that part of Snowfall mourned for Glacier. Jerboa III later thought about how Glacier was a reasonable dragon to deal with, unlike Snowfall.
The Dangerous Gift

Glacier was mentioned by Snowfall several times throughout the first chapter. Snowfall wondered why Glacier chose her as the next queen, and told herself it was because of fate. She also appeared in a brief flashback to when she was on her deathbed, surrounded by her three daughters. Snowfall also thought of Glacier several times throughout the book, finally finding out why Glacier chose her as the next queen instead of Crystal or Mink in her final vision.

Glacier appeared in Snowfall's vision of Jerboa III, being the first dragon Jerboa III knew who felt bad and cried about her past. Jerboa and Glacier were great friends until the day Glacier caught the plague, in which Jerboa III grieved for her death. Glacier never asked for a single spell from Jerboa, something Jerboa appreciated greatly.

Field Guides[]

A Guide to the Dragon World

Glacier was mentioned in Coral's scroll about the War of SandWing Succession.

Later, she was depicted with the gift of light in a portrait at the beginning of the IceWing chapter. She was later mentioned in Mink's Jade Mountain Academy application. Her notes to Igloo about her coronation feast were also featured in the chapter.

Relationships[]

Blaze[]

Glacier mainly allied with Blaze for the prospect of new territory for the IceWings rather than for her actual queenliness.[11] She did not have the same faith in the SandWing's persuasive abilities or her dazzling charisma as Blaze did.[11] Blaze herself said that Glacier told her that military stuff is too confusing. She was fiercely protective of her ally, having fought off a SkyWing who was sent to kill Blaze.[13] During a vision in The Dangerous Gift, she thought of Blaze as a "cheerful brain-dead goose."[14] Glacier was slightly concerned that the SandWings would have a foolish queen with Blaze on the throne, so she was determined to be a strong ally and trade partner to help guide Blaze if she won.[15] Despite looking out for her safety, she played fair and told Blaze she must fight on her own when Blister attacked her during The Brightest Night.[16]

Crystal[]

Glacier loved[3] and cared for her eldest daughter. One of the reasons she chose Snowfall over Crystal to be queen was because she knew or suspected that Crystal was in a relationship with Gharial, and knew that making Crystal choose between her kingdom and her lover would tear her daughter apart.[17]

Jerboa III[]

Before becoming queen, Glacier met Jerboa III by accident, and they became close friends. Glacier cried when the animus revealed the cost of her animus spells, and was the only dragon who had ever shown Jerboa III empathy. The IceWing believed Jerboa III existed for a purpose, and that she might save the world one day with her magic, so Glacier never asked her for any spells.[12]

Mink[]

Glacier loved[3] and showed affection towards her youngest daughter. When she was on her deathbed, she comforted Mink by giving her a hug. Mink said that when she could not sleep, she would sometimes go to Glacier's room and sleep alongside her mother.[18]

Narwhal[]

Narwhal was Glacier's brother. Glacier entrusted him oversee palace matters in her absence, demonstrating that she thought he could make good choices.[19]

Snowfall[]

Watching Snowfall filled Glacier with hope.[15] She loved her very dearly, and believed that Snowfall would fight for their tribe like no one else would.[3] She believed that Snowfall was the best possible option for queen. After Glacier died, Snowfall flinched whenever Jerboa III mentioned her, and she wished that they could have had more years together as a family.

Winter[]

Glacier was polite and kind towards Winter, unlike his parents. She appeared to be sympathetic to Winter before the Diamond Trial. Winter looked up to Glacier[2] and described her as a good queen, and thought she could be trusted with Darkstalker's scroll.[5]
