Literature is an extraordinarily prevalent part of Pyrrhia's culture. Scrolls are written and read by the majority of the dragon tribes. They are printed with ink on an unconfirmed type of paper, although it is likely vellum or parchment as hinted at by Starflight.[1] Dragons are almost always shown writing on scrolls by dipping their claws in ink and scratching the paper.[2] Sometimes dragons use things like reeds to write.[3]

In Pantala, books fill in the role of scrolls.

Tribes[]

HiveWings[]

HiveWings have textbooks in school for subjects such as biology.[4] There are also other educational books for subjects such as architecture.[5]

IceWings[]

Tundra made Winter memorize stories of dragons attempting the Diamond Trial, revealing that IceWings can read.[6] He also mentioned IceWing sagas that "told the history of the world".[7] In the outer Ice Kingdom villages, writers use sealskin for scrolls that are carried by wandering librarians circulating the outer villages.[8]

LeafWings[]

In The Poison Jungle, Hazel was seen making books.[9] Before the Tree Wars, the LeafWings had several libraries that they had to abandon when they fled to the Poison Jungle, leading many HiveWings to believe that LeafWings could not read. Literature is very important to their tribe.[10] While living in the Poison Jungle, LeafWings used jungle ingredients for bookbinding such as glue made from sap, threads made from tree fibers, and dyed bark for covers.[11]

MudWings[]

Pheasant said she was reading about the Prophecy, hinting that MudWings sometimes read scrolls.[12] MudWings are shown to be capable readers once more when Sora was seen reading a scroll in the school library.[13] Queen Moorhen mentioned how she had read Queen Coral's scrolls before, giving more evidence of literacy in MudWings.[14] Bullfrog mentioned having read history books, implying that MudWings have textbooks.[15] There is a library in the MudWing palace with scrolls from ancient Mud Kingdom times.[16]

NightWings[]

The NightWings both read and wrote many scrolls, several NightWings such as Starflight, Mastermind, and Moonwatcher are fascinated by and enjoy reading scrolls. There used to be extensive and impressive libraries on the NightWing Island[17] and in the lost city of night.[18] The NightWings were the first tribe to develop a written Dragon language which they then taught to the other tribes so that history could be recorded. Their ancient scrolls mentioned traveling NightWing teachers who brought scrolls to every tribe on Pyrrhia.[19] The NightWings would copy scrolls by talon in order to distribute them across the continent.[20]

RainWings[]

RainWings did not read scrolls and never knew about them or the rest of Pyrrhia for hundreds of years before Glory claimed the RainWing throne.[21] Sunny was seen teaching a RainWing dragonet class how to read,[22] and Kinkajou went to a nearby school to get some paper and a blank scroll for Moonwatcher to draw on and record what she saw in Icicle's dream.[23] There is also a very old RainWing scroll in the library in Possibility from over a thousand years ago. Although they do not use scrolls in modern times, the RainWings still told stories through oral storytelling traditions passed down throughout history. They once had libraries and traded scrolls with other tribes.[24]

SandWings[]

Thorn, during her time spent as the leader of the Outclaws, had been shown writing wanted posters.[25] During her reign, Oasis had a system that intercepted messages written on scrolls.[26] Sunny, Thorn, and Smolder also went into a room in the SandWing fortress that had many scrolls.[26]

SeaWings[]

The SeaWings often read scrolls, most of which are written by Queen Coral. Queen Coral's scrolls are written with a mixture of squid ink and a whale blood, a mixture concocted by Whirlpool, to make the words permanent and waterproof.[2]

SilkWings[]

It is known that SilkWings read books.[27] During the reign of Wasp, the SilkWings learned how to read and write in school for the sole purpose of being able to work certain jobs or be exposed to propaganda.[28]

SkyWings[]

Peril lied to Scarlet about reading about the Champion's Shield in a scroll, and Queen Scarlet replied, saying, "with claws that burn through paper right when you touch it."[29] They also use scrolls for messaging.[30]

  • A Little NightWing Music — An old scroll mentioned by Fierceteeth.[32] The title may be a reference to the composition Eine kleine Nachtmusik by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which is translated as "a little night music" in English.
  • A Longitudinal Study of Peculiar Scavenger Behavior — A scroll about scavenger life on Pyrrhia.[33]
  • A Midsummer NightWing's Dream — An old scroll mentioned by Fierceteeth.[32] The title may be a reference to the play A Midsummer's Night Dream by William Shakespeare.
  • A Natural History of Unnatural Dragon Abilities — A scroll mentioned by Starflight about dragons' strange abilities.[34]
  • A Royal Feast: For the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Glacier — A scroll written by Igloo on the courses that would be served at Glacier's conoration feast, featuring notes from Glacier herself. It was stored in Glacier's library after her coronation.[35]
  • A Tail of Blood — A murder mystery by Coral.[36] It is the sequel of The Claws of Murder and returns to the SeaWing detective who has to solve another murder from within her family.[37]
  • All Hail the Squid of Destiny — The first scroll in Coral's epic fantasy saga about a trio of squid who go on adventures in the sea.[37]
  • Ancient Wars of Pyrrhia — A scroll owned by Darkstalker about old Pyrrhian wars. He used his magic to make the scroll talk in the voice of Truthfinder.[38]
  • Bite, Swim, Roar — A travel memoir by Coral about her royal trips to the other kingdoms around Pyrrhia.[37]
  • Challenges for the RainWing Throne — A scroll written by Glory with information from Handsome about the history of RainWing royal challenges and common challenges performed during a royal challenge.[40]
  • Dangers of the Rainforest — A scroll about the Rainforest Kingdom's dangerous animals and obstacles.[44] An updated version of the scroll featuring commentary from Queen Glory was published in Starflight's guide.[45]
  • Darkstalker's scroll — A scroll with Darkstalker's animus powers enchanted into it. It is currently destroyed, though small pieces of it have been torn off before and may still exist.[46]
  • Express Your Feelings in Full Color! — A scroll written by Glory with information from Jambu about the meaning of different RainWing scale colors.[47]
  • Geography of Pyrrhia — A scroll owned by Darkstalker explaining Pyrrhia's geography.[46]
  • Goodnight, Moons — A scroll owned by Darkstalker.[46] The title may be a reference to the book Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.
  • How the SeaWings Ended the Great War and Saved the World! — A scroll by Coral about her view on the events of the War of SandWing Succession, written specifically for Starflight's guide.[48]
  • How to Choose Your Pet! — A scroll Smolder studied after he began to keep Rose as a pet.[49]
  • Journeys in the Ice Kingdom — A scroll about the Ice Kingdom.[30]
  • Myths of the Lost Continent — A scroll owned by Darkstalker about the myths of the lost continent.[46]
  • On Queen Vigilance's Glass Jubilee — A scroll from the Renewal library about Queen Vigilance's achievements during her reign, especially her glass jubilee.[51]
  • On the Differences Between Oysters and Clams - A scroll written by Coral about class differences and genetic superiority.[52]
  • One Moon, Two Moon, Three Moon — A dragonet scroll by Coral about counting.[53]
  • RainWings: Extermination or Enslavement?[54] — A scroll in Mastermind's lab written by two NightWing authors. It provided two arguments for whether the RainWings should all be killed or enslaved by the NightWings.[55]
  • Rising from the Ruins — A scroll written by Fierceteeth about the beginnings of the settlement of Renewal.[56]
  • Strange Time for a New Pet — A scroll written by Smolder of his observations on Rose the first week he kept her as a pet.[57]
  • Studying the Studiers: Interview with a NightWing — A scroll recounting an interview between Glory and Mastermind, transcribed by Deathbringer. It includes information about how the NightWings were raised and lived on the island along with historical achievements of the NightWing tribe.[58]
  • Tales of the NightWings — A scroll with lots of stories about the NightWings' greatness.[59] One story from the scroll features a dragonet named Comet who hatched under no full moons but had the power of foresight which he used to save his tribe. It is a story of faith, perseverence, and heroism.[60]
  • Ten Little Scavengers (Recipes Included!) — A scroll owned by Darkstalker.[46]
  • The Animus Gifts of the IceWings — A scroll written about several of the notable animus gifts the IceWings have been given throughout their history, including notes from Queen Snowfall.[61]
  • The Animus Histories — A scroll read by Moonwatcher about animus dragons and their enchanted objects.[62]
  • The Claws of Murder — A murder mystery scroll by Coral[36] about a SeaWing detective who has to solve a murder within her noble family.[63]
  • The Importance of Being a NightWing — An old scroll mentioned by Fierceteeth.[32]
  • The Legend of the Scorching — A scroll documenting the Scorching from the dragons' point of view.[64]
  • The Missing Princess — An adventure scroll inspired by the disappearance of Tsunami's egg. It was written by Coral[65] and depicts dolphins playing harps,[66] glowing jellyfish, bowing seahorses, and bejeweled lobsters leading the way to the Deep Palace.[67] Updated versions of the scroll include an interview with Tsunami.[63]
  • The Mysterious Egg — A scroll in the MudWing palace library that was noted to be the most ancient scroll the MudWings have.[16] It was written by Moccasin[68] and is faded, fragmented, and was part of a diary.[16] It recounts Moccasin's first egg hatching and her unusual red-colored egg which led to the discovery of MudWing fireproof scales.[69]
  • The Puddle that Dreamed of Becoming an Ocean — A scroll by Coral about purpose, destiny, ambition, silly ideas, knowing your place, and the "wetness of your soul".[37]
  • The Royal Lineage of SeaWings, from the Scorching to Present — A scroll about the SeaWing Royal Lineage.[70]
  • The Sinister Jellyfish — A scroll by Coral about a jellyfish that causes trouble in the SeaWing royal family.[63]

  • Book of Clearsight — A book made by Clearsight which mentions possible futures along with a map of the only known travel route between the two continents, which was hidden in the back cover.[92]
  • HiveWing School Curriculum — A book written by Cricket (with insight from some unnamed SilkWings) about the curriculum that was taught to HiveWings during Wasp's reign.[93]

It was the book Cricket was reading the first time she saw a whole Hive Command.   • The Count of Mount Kudzu — A book about a falsely imprisoned dragon and revenge. It is Sundew's favorite book.[101] It may be a reference to the novel The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.

Trivia[]

  • In The Lost Heir, one of the panels shows The Missing Princess, but written differently with dots in some of the letters. This shows an example of dragon letters.[104]
  • There are a few mentions of books in Pyrrhia. In Darkness of Dragons, Qibli mentioned a catalogue of books in the NightWing library.[105] Also, in The Dangerous Gift, while Lynx told Snowfall how she was not agreeable, Lynx mentioned reading a book.[106]
