The Indestructible City, also abbreviated as the IC,[1] is a human settlement introduced in Dragonslayer. It lies near the mountain range splitting Pyrrhia and bordering the Kingdom of Sand, by the Winding Tail River. It sits on a cliff and is described to look like a city in the sky. It is ruled by the Invincible Lord.

Description[]

The city is near a bend in the Winding Tail River, north of the Rainforest Kingdom, and west of Queen Moorhen's lake. Unlike most human settlements, it is not hidden away.

The Indestructible City is built halfway up a cliff overlooking a forest and towers far overhead,[2] sheltered by a huge overhanging ledge. It is placed so any dragon would be visible for miles in any direction.[3] Cave entrances dot the cliffside and odd structures are carved out of the rock.[4] One way of entering the city is by an "endlessly long" set of stairs that had been chipped out of the cliff face, cutting back and forth on a path into the sky, now worn smooth and slippery with no railing to keep someone from tripping and plummeting off the cliff.[5] The second way is from a contraption designed for rising and lowering heavy goods and humans in and out of the walls.[6] A wall of thick stone runs around the edge, ending at the cliff on each side. There are several gardens over the city. Guards protect the tall, narrow stairs that lead to the city on the top of a cliff. A waterfall cascades down the cliff, not far from the city walls,[4][5] with waterwheels out in the spray to collect the water.[7][5]

Wagons, tents, and rugs are spread over the ground. Families sleep in huddled piles far back in the cliff, and some stir pots over campfires.[5] There are markets for trading, clothes, and medicine.[8] There are also clowns in the Indestructible City.[9]

The Indestructible City is said to be one of the only scavenger cities to fight back against dragons.[10] The Invincible Lord ensured that there is no room for refugees outside of the city,[11] and that all orphans or wanderers are stamped, turned over, and firmly kept inside the city.[12]

Notable features[]

Defenses[]

The Indestructible City is mentioned by Rowan and Undauntable to utilize "massive dragon-fighting catapults." All the guards wear boiled leather armor covered in spikes to make it harder for a dragon to pick them up and carry them off.

It also has a large wooden contraption called a ballista that is fit together with rope and metal. The pointed end of its spear slides into a slot in the stone wall and pokes out of the outer side. The spear is as long as a dragon, and was activated by a torch, shooting a flaming projectile at targets.[13]

History[]

The Jade Mountain Prophecy[]

Winter Turning[]

The scavenger den that shot at Qibli and the others was the Indestructible City.

Legends[]

Dragonslayer[]

The Indestructible City was first mentioned by Rowan when she recalled the legend of the Dragonslayer. Wren and Sky visited the city to trade Sky's rare scales for books, clothes, and other useful things. Sky stayed hidden while Wren does this. The prince of the city, Undauntable, gave Wren silver pieces in exchange for the scales. Later in the novel, the city was the main site of General Sandstorm's attack to find Oasis' treasure.

Trivia[]

  • Despite the Indestructible City being larger than most scavenger dens and even having a large castle, in the first two arcs of the mainstream series, it is labeled with an image of a farm instead.
