Look, I understand not everyone has the intense fascination with butterflies that I do, but Blue is NOT named after the Blue Morpho, he IS named after the gorgeous and under-appriciated BlueĀ butterflies (or lycaenids, but that refers more to the larger gossamer-winged butterfly family. I'm talking about the Polyommatinae subfamily specifically). I will not accept a universe where "Blue is named after the blue morpho obviously I've never actually looked at butterflies lol"Ā is the reality. I will fight anyone who says otherwise with my dazzling knowledge of bugs.
I mean, look at these beautiesĀ ! This one looks just like Blue's canon description! And this one! And thisĀ ! And thisĀ ! There's so many pretty Blue butterflies , and I'm tired of the blue morpho being default blue butterfly when these adorable little creatures are out there .
Not only that, but there are tons ofĀ morphos Ā out there that aren't the blue morpho . By insisting that Blue is named after the blue morpho you ignore these fabulous butterfliesĀ !
We know Tui knows her stuff! She's named after a bird from New Zealand, and had a SilkWings named "Sunstreak" and "Xenica". I didn't even know there were Sunstreak orĀ Xenica butterflies before I read TLC! So I insistĀ that if Tui wanted to make a SilkWing based off morphos she would have known enough to nameĀ him Morpho! It's common sense!Ā
But wait, Sage! you might be saying. Blue was described with "morpho-like" scales! So he must be named after the blue morpho!Ā
Yes, I reply. He was indeed described as having "morpho-like" scales. But! Luna was described as having "caterpillar-green" scales! Was she named after a caterpillar? NO! She was named after the gorgeous and incredibly fabulous ActiasĀ moths!Ā
And! You know what all morphos are famous for? Including the white, brown, and orange varieties? Iridescence. They are one of the most stinking beautiful and superb examples of iridescence in the entire animal kingdom! So, since Tui did not specify the type of morpho Blue's scales resembled, it would be logical to assume that Tui was referring to the thing all morphos have in common: gorgeous iridescent scales! Blue butterflies also have those iridescent scales, but they're smaller, so they don't catch the light the way morphos do, and thereby are less famous for it. So, if you were writing TLC, and you had the fabulous opportunity to write an iridescent butterfly dragon, you would naturally talk about how he looks like one of the most well-known iridescent creatures in the animal kingdom! Therefore, morpho-like scales do not a morpho make!
Tl;dr? Blue is named after the Blue (Polyommatinae) butterflies indisputably.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
(These are my favorite Blue butterflies ) (and these are my favorite morphosĀ !)
(Note: If this blatant insult to lepidopterists everywhere continues, I'll have to make an OC named Morpho based off of the sunset and white morphos, and an OC named Blue based off the real Blues. And I will shove them everywhere I can. I will not allow this to continue without drastic measures.)
