Tui Tamara Sutherland is a Venezuelan-American children's book author, most notably the author of the New York Times and the USA Today bestselling series Wings of Fire. She has also written the book Against the Tide, the fifth installment to the Spirit Animals series, and The Menagerie series.

Biography[]

Tui was born in Caracas, Venezuela on July 31st, 1978, and was named after the tui bird, which is endemic to New Zealand. Before high school, she lived in Asunción, Paraguay; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and Miami, Florida. Tui received an education at Williams College and then moved to New Jersey. She currently resides in Boston, Massachusetts with her husband, Adam Sterns, her sons, Jonah and Elliot, and her dog, Rainbow Dog, or Bo for short. Tui was also featured on Jeopardy in 2009 as a two-day champion.

Tui is very passionate and loving of both her books and FanWings (Wings of Fire fans). She loved to do live chats on the Scholastic Wings of Fire forum and has a collection of small videos on the Scholastic YouTube channel. She usually changes her favorite dragon while she writes and she uses other dragon books to aid her writing. She loved her dog Sunshine dearly, as she named Sunny after her. Unfortunately, Sunshine passed away in the summer of 2020; Tui eventually got a new dog, whom her children named Bumblebee.[event 1]
