I've been thinking lately.

For those of you who know me really, and I mean, really, know me well, you know that me "thinking" can end up with interesting results. Like, when I tapped note cards with funny comments all over the kitchen with a friend at 04:00 on New Year's Day (2014). All of that aside, here's what you came for. How big are Pyrrhia's dragons?

Note: The first time I did this, I used Roux-NikkiMcCloud logic, which turned out to be incorrect. A lot of you pointed this out, and I was able to find my mistake. It wasn't in the math, it was in the scavenger's height. I forgot that a scavenger stands to Sunny's shoulders, and therefore I assumed that a scavenger was half the height (100px) than it actually should be (200px). Therefore, you will seee the basic info, and then my goofed calculations. Finally, you will come across the correct calculations and all of my other disclaimers.

Basic Information[]

I got bored and decided to calculate the size of these monsters. Using the information provided in the series, here's the basics:

Sunny, standing on her hind legs, is about half of Kestrel's height.

Kestrel is very large, in dragon terms.

Morrowseer is even bigger than Kestrel.

Sunny can carry a scavenger on her shoulders comfortably.

NOT INCLUDED IN FIRST CALCULATION: A scavenger stands to Sunny's shoulders.

Here, I used rough estimates. They are, by no means, exact. They are educated guesses, and please treat them as such. Here's a picture of the average SandWing.

Proportions

The proportions of a SandWing

Now, Sunny is not the average SandWing. But she has the basic proportions, and she is shaped like one, so I am using this. Sunny's hind legs contribute to about half of her height. Standing, she is approx. 450px tall (Typo in the picture). Adding the hind leg, she's probably 850px tall.

Using this information, we can tell that Kestrel is twice 850px. I put her height at 1800px. But, Morrowseer is larger. Guessing the dragonets' perspectives, he's about 2200px tall.

But, we have no sense of scale. There's no way to tell how tall they are. Here is the solution. Scavengers, or humans, can easily ride on Sunny's shoulders. Using this, we can assume that a scavenger is 100px tall (I goofed, it's more of 200px). I see scavengers as, well, not as evolved as we humans are. And they probably get less nutrition as us, so they're probably shorter. The average male is, what, 5 foot 8 inches (1.86 (bar) meters)? I put the scavengers at 5 foot 6 inches (1.83 (bar) meters).

Here's My Goofed Version[]

Now we have a scale. Cue epic music!

The proportion goes as follows: 100px (scavenger height) over 5.5 feet (assumed scavenger height) = 450px (Sunny's standing height) over x (Sunny's standing height, in our measurments). First, we cross-multiply, which gives us 100x = 5.5(450). 5.5 times 450 is 24.75, so we plug that in. 100x = 2475. Now, we solve for x. We divide by 100 to get x by itself, and what you do to one side, you do to the other. 2475 divided by 100 is 24.75. Therefore, x, Sunny's height, is equivalent to 24.75 feet.

By solving the proportion, we can find that Sunny is 24 feet tall and 3 inches. Or, she's 8.25 meters. Approximately. Doing this for everyone else, here's the scale: Scavanger: 5.5 feet or 1.83 (bar) meters

Sunny: 24.25 feet or 8.25 meters

Sunny (Standing on hind legs): 44 feet or 14.6 meters

Hold on to your horses, everyone! This is where it gets ridiculously insane.

Kestrel: 100 feet or 33.3 (bar) meters!

Please adjust yourself so you don't fall out of your chair/off the bed/collapse/etc.

Morrowseer: 121 feet tall or 40.3 (bar) meters!!! Morrowseer is huge! And, dragons like Burn or Queen Oasis are probably bigger. Mind blown! And, giving a rough estimate, Burn, Queen Oasis, and even Grandeur are probably 150 feet tall, or 50 meters.

Our average dragon is probably going to be around 80 feet tall (26.6 (bar) meters). This is just a guess, i did not actually calculate this.

Here's an image I made to help you see this.

Corrected Calculations[]

Here's my recalculation. I had several people telling me that the dragons seemed too big, so I looked into the series to find more information. Turns out, I messed up. A scavenger is both 200px and 5.5 ft tall, so we just set up a proportion for that. Here's what I turned out with, give or take a few inches or feet:

Scavenger: 5.5 feet or 1.83 (bar) meters.

Sunny: 12.65 feet or 4.216 (bar) meters.

Sunny (Standing on hind legs): 23.65 feet or 7.883 (bar) meters

Kestrel's height was nerfed, but she's still huge.

Kestrel: 49.5 feet or or 16.5 meters.

The same goes for Morrowseer.

Morrowseer: 60.5 feet or 20.16 (bar) meters.

Older dragons such as Burn or Granduer: 82.5 feet or 27.5 meters. (Not exact, just guesses!)

Here is a picture I made to summarize this.

Disclaimers[]

This is just a theory. It has, in no way, been confirmed by Tui T. Sutherland or Scholastic. This is just fan speculation, and please, for the love of Holler and Fluffy, treat this as such. I used Joy Ang's images because they're official. Yes, they're just images, but they have (most likely) been approved by Tui T. Sutherland, so i will treat them as an official source.

Also, these calculations aren't exact. They're estimates, they're pretty close, but, most of all, you can get an image from them. That's the important thing. That you learn something, that you enjoy, and that you see Pyrrhia in a more realistic way.

I made this in the most simple way possible, because, heck, the math itself is simple.

Also, we have no idea how big Morrowseer is in comparsion to Kestrel. The books only mentioned "much bigger", and I am assuming what I used is fairly close. We do know, however, that he is at least 60 feet tall.

Conclusion[]

There you have it! The heights of Pyrrhia's dragons, both in a totally opsurd way and in a logical way. Sorry about my mistake, but hey, that's what seperates me from the machines. I hope you learned something, had fun, and overall, did not end up with a melted brain.

Besides, wouldn't be fun to figure out how much they weigh?

EDIT: Okay, I did it, I found out how much they weigh. Here it is!
