Plot[]
Prologue[]
Hailstorm took his brother Winter out searching for a scavenger den in the Sky Kingdom two years prior to when the main story was set. While Winter expressed doubt about their safety, Hailstorm assured Winter that they would be fine, disregarding Winter's worry about getting in trouble with their parents because he was destined to be second-in-command of the IceWing army. Hearing this boast, forteen SkyWings, led by Ruby, came out of the trees and attempted to capture the two IceWing princes. In order to save Winter, Hailstorm told the SkyWings that his brother was useless and that no one in the Ice Kingdom would care. Ruby allowed Winter to go back to the Ice Kingdom in order to tell the queen that Hailstorm was captured. The SkyWings then knocked Hailstorm unconscious and he woke up in Queen Scarlet's throne room, with an orange dragon sitting next to her throne. Scarlet told the orange dragon that Hailstorm was dangerous and must be hidden, and the orange dragon responded that Hailstorm would not be found.
Part 1: A Cold Wind[]
Two years later, Winter had a flashback to when he was two years old and was part of a hunting party with his mother, Tundra, Icicle, and Hailstorm. They were tasked with killing a polar bear to bring to Queen Glacier. When Winter found a polar bear, he also spotted a scavenger watching the bear. He studied the scavenger when Tundra flew up behind him and yelled at him to kill the polar bear. Winter ended up losing the bear as it ran into a cave, disappointing his family.
Back in the present, Winter tried to find a place to release Bandit, intent on going back to the Ice Kingdom to get help from Glacier to find his brother. Moonwatcher, Qibli, Kinkajou, and Turtle showed up and told Winter that they wanted to help him find his brother. They offered ideas of where Winter could go instead of the Ice Kingdom, when Moon was struck by her prophecy, saying it outloud to the other Jade Winglet dragons. Moon told Turtle to give Winter a skyfire rock and Moon told Winter about her NightWing powers. Winter became distrustful of Moon, and angrily scared Bandit out of his cage and into the forest. The IceWing was adamant that he does not need help, and managed to convince Turtle to return to Jade Mountain Academy. When the others refused to back down, Winter agreed to go to the Rainforest Kingdom, planning to quickly save Hailstorm and return to the Ice Kingdom as a hero.
When they get to the rainforest, Winter was overwhelmed and disliked everything. When the group noticed a sloth, Winter attempted to catch it in order to eat it, but was attacked by Exquisite, who took her sloth and went away. When Moon sensed dragons approaching, Moon, Qibli, and Winter hid in a tree until they were gone. While in the tree, Winter told the others about how distrustful the NightWings are, mentioning Darkstalker, which caused Moon to fall out of the tree. Before Winter could tell the whole story of Darkstalker, Moon sensed the dragons from before coming back, saying that they should hide. Kinkajou called the dragons over, thinking that one of them was Orchid, but was instead Bromeliad. The NightWing with her, Obsidian, noticed Winter and called the group down to take them to the NightWing village. When they arrive in the village, Moon reunited with Secretkeeper. Deathbringer tackled Winter and sat on him, thinking that he was the IceWing Sunny warned them about. Glory arrived and got Deathbringer off of Winter before introducing herself. She told one of her guards, Heliconia, to tell her scout captains to meet at the pavilion, before taking the Jade Winglet dragonets there. At the pavilion, Moon sensed that one of the RainWings scouts had seen something strange, and the RainWing admitted that they saw something by the giant banyan tree. Winter, Qibli, Moon, and Glory go to check out the area by the tree where they found a dead NightWing. When they return to the pavilion, Glory, concerned over what they found, told the Jade Winglet dragons that they should stay in the dragonet wingery. Winter tried to oppose her, but Qibli convinced him to agree so they could sneak off later.
In the wingery, the RainWing and NightWing dragonets took an interest in the older dragons, but once the older dragonets got them to go away, they started to discuss Moon's prophecy and what it could mean. In order to get out of the wingery, Kinkajou told the dragonets that they were going to play hide-and-seek, having the dragonets count. While they were counting, they escaped through the bottom of the wingery and traveled to the NightWing tunnels. They enter the tunnel to the NightWing island and Winter saw the secret home of the NightWings for the first time. When Kinkajou expressed sympathy for the NightWings, Winter snapped at her about how terrible the NightWings were. When Moon asked if the IceWings hating the NightWings had anything to do with Darkstalker, Winter told the group the entire story of Darkstalker from the IceWings' perspective, where a NightWing named Foeslayer kidnapped Arctic, an IceWing animus prince, taking away animus magic from the IceWings forever. Moon realised that they were in the wrong place and that they had to find the kingdom the NightWings lived in before Darkstalker.
When they tried to go into the NightWing fortress to look for a dreamvisitor, they instead found Icicle, who was in terrible condition. She told Winter that she would not let herself sleep because she did not want to see Scarlet. When Kinkajou defended Glory, Icicle teased Kinkajou, causing the angry RainWing to attack Icicle, but before Icicle could kill Kinkajou, Glory and Deathbringer showed up and arrested Icicle, taking her to the healer's hut, after knocking her out with a tranquilizer. The Jade Winglet dragonets planned to wait until Scarlet showed up in Icicle's dream so that Moon could hear their conversation and possibly see where Scarlet was. When Moon told Winter that Scarlet was in Icicle's mind, she told him to get her paper and something to write with, but Kinkajou went to get that instead. When Scarlet has left, Moon told Winter that she heard about the deal he made with Icicle before she fell asleep, but assured him that she was not worried that he would kill Glory. When Kinkajou returned, Moon drew the mountain she was behind Scarlet in the dream. None of the dragonets recognized it, but they went to Deathbringer to see if he knew where it was.
Part 2: In the Claws of the Clouds[]
Deathbringer did not recognize the mountain in Moon's drawing, but told the group that Talons of Peace might. Glory gave permission for Winter and Qibli to go to the talons because they were not her subjects, but she was hesitant to let Moon and Kinkajou go. When the two protested and argue against the queen, she allowed them to go, but made them promise to stay away from Scarlet.
Winter, Moon, Qibli, and Kinkajou traveled to an area near a scavenger den which was now a new spot for signals to the Talons of Peace. Moon suggested that she and Qibli could wait until night so they could make twin flames, but Winter made a signal by flashing his bright scales in the sun. When Winter was up in the sky, he noticed that the scavengers in the den had seen the other dragons and were going to fire a weapon at them. In order to save them, Winter used his frostbreath to change the trajectory of the flaming spear. While Moon and Kinkajou went out to find food, Qibli asked Winter to draw the weapon for Qibli. The two were talking about their families and Winter's plan to return to the Ice Kingdom with his brother when a SeaWing, Squid, lunged out of the water at Winter. When Winter attacked back, Riptide showed up and criticized Squid. Riptide introduced himself and Winter told him that they were looking for a SkyWing in the Talons of Peace. Riptide called several members from the talons, one an IceWing, which surprised Winter. While a member went to get the SkyWings in the talons, Winter questioned the IceWing, who introduced himself as Cirrus. Winter found the IceWing suspicious since he did not know Winter's parents.
Moon and Kinkajou returned and Qibli introduced them to the talons. The two SkyWings, Avalanche and Pyrite, arrived and Avalanche did not recognize the mountain. Pyrite at first did not recognize the mountain, Moon saw in her mind that she did and pressured her to admit it. When Cirrus questioned why they were looking for the mountain, Winter told the talons that they think it is where Scarlet was hiding, which excited Pyrite who was a Scarlet loyalist. Knowing that they were looking for Scarlet, Pyrite agreed to help them. When Pyrite handed the drawing back to Winter, Winter felt a tingling that he had felt at the NightWing tunnels, making him think that Pyrite was an animus.
When the group arrived at the mountain, they split up and search the valley, but only find one of Scarlet's scales as remnant of the SkyWing. That night, Scarlet dreamvisited Winter and tried to scare him, but Winter was able to remove his skyfire and get Moon to wake him up. Winter, Moon, and Qibli realized that Scarlet had to have seen Winter that day in order to dreamvisit him and they searched the valley at night. Moon was able to sense Scarlet and the three sneak up on Scarlet, trying to hear what she was saying. They found her talking with another dragon and Scarlet decided that it was time for her to kill Hailstorm, telling the dragon she was with to get Pyrite.
Moon, Winter, and Qibli flew back to their campsite where Winter jumped on Pyrite and asked what she knew about his brother. He was convinced that she was an animus, but Moon claimed that she could not sense that in Pyrite's mind. When Winter tried to remove Pyrite's pouch, the SkyWing attacked Winter, throwing him in the fire. A NightWing showed up and attacked Kinkajou, knocking her unconscious, causing Moon and Winter to both attack him while Qibli held Pyrite down. Winter removed Pyrite's pouch and the SkyWing begun to transform into an IceWing, revealing her to have been Hailstorm.
Hailstorm was confused, having thoughts as both Pyrite and himself. Winter, Moon, and Qibli managed to use a tree branch to carry Kinkajou and leave the valley. Qibli took the group to Possibility in order to hide from Scarlet and get help for Kinkajou. While waiting for Qibli to get directions to a doctor, Winter tried to understand how Hailstorm was thinking, but found that his brother's mind was tangled with two different memories of his life, one as an IceWing and one as Pyrite. Qibli returned with directions to a doctor and the group took Kinkajou into the town. A SandWing named Meerkat took Kinkajou and Moon into Mayfly's hut, while Winter, Hailstorm, and Qibli waited in Mayfly's garden.
Winter and Qibli examined Pyrite's necklace and found a piece of paper with writing on it, revealing that Pyrite was a spell. In order to understand how Hailstorm felt as Pyrite, Winter put the necklace on after Qibli modified the spell so that Pyrite would not put up a fight to take the necklace off. Pyrite was surprised, not knowing where she was. Qibli asked her if she remembered anything about Winter to which Pyrite described him as grumpy. He asked Pyrite if he could see her necklace and she took it off, giving it to Qibli and freeing Winter from the spell.
Moon entered the garden and told Qibli and Winter that Kinkajou had been badly injured. Hailstorm called out in a crowd for a SkyWing he recognized during his time as Pyrite. The SkyWing, Eagle, was aggressive toward Hailstorm since he was an IceWing, but Meerkat was able to diffuse the situation. Hailstorm told Winter that he wanted to go home and Winter thought that it was best for the two to return to the Ice Kingdom. Moon told Winter that they would wait a week for him to come back before they left Possibility, and Winter and Hailstorm took off for the Ice Kingdom.
Part 3: Beneath the Ice[]
Winter and Hailstorm arrived at the Great Ice Cliff where Winter had to remind Hailstorm about the animus gift. He reflected on how Foeslayer stole animus magic from the IceWings and that they could have had so many more animus gifts if Arctic had not been stolen. When they arrive at the palace, Winter took Hailstorm to the courtyard where they reunited with their father, Narwhal, who was busy organizing the gift of order in Glacier's absence. Winter saw that Icicle's name was last in the rankings, with his name just above hers. Narwhal told Hailstorm to come with him to his chambers to explain everything while Winter went to his room to sleep.
Winter awoke to his mother criticizing him for sleeping in late. As they walked out of Winter's room, she thanked him for returning Hailstorm. Winter entered the courtyard where all the IceWings in the palace had gathered to see how Narwhal would adjust the rankings with his returned son. Narwhal announced that Hailstorm would be slotted into last place at the bottom of the rankings, dooming Hailstorm who was only twelve days from turning seven and having his ranking decide his future. Additionally, Narwhal changed Winter's ranking, putting him into first place for everything he did to return Hailstorm. Winter was shocked and flew up to join the first circle dragonets.
Snowfall, the previous first ranked dragonet and one of Glacier's daughters, noted that the results of the meeting was unexpected, while Lynx, another dragonet in the first circle, congratulated Winter. When Hailstorm went to talk with Winter, Snowfall mentioned the diamond trial to the brothers, a method of raising the rank of a dragonet in last place. When Winter asked if Hailstorm was going to do the trial, he realized that in order for Hailstorm to get his rank up, he would have to go up against Winter, making the IceWing realize why his father put him in first place. Hailstorm enacted the trial and the next day when Glacier arrived, Winter traveled to the courtyard where he, Hailstorm, Glacier, Narwhal, and Tundra would fly to the Diamond Caves. During the flight, Glacier had Winter tell her everything about his adventure.
When the group arrived at the entrance to the Diamond Caves, Glacier gave Winter and Hailstorm spears and instructions for the trial. They would have to find the frozen dragon by the river chasm and touch her with their spears. Narwhal and Tundra told the brothers to restore their family rank before they two entered the cave. Winter and Hailstorm traveled together within the caves until they found a room full of frozen IceWings from previous trials. They found the dragon Glacier had told them about and Hailstorm touched his spear to her, cracking the ice and revealing a NightWing.
Hailstorm told the NightWing that he was there to kill her, but the NightWing told the IceWings that they should introduce themselves. Winter introduced himself to which the NightWing told the IceWings that her name was Foeslayer. Winter was shocked that the NightWing was Darkstalker's mother and Foeslayer explained that Diamond, Arctic's mother, had used her animus magic to trap Foeslayer in the Diamond Caves, creating the gift of vengeance. Hailstorm attacked Foeslayer, causing Winter to do so as well.
Winter admitted to Hailstorm that does not want to fight with his brother over a ranking. Winter told Hailstorm that he was willing to take last place, but realized that that was not possible, and Winter had Hailstorm kill Foeslayer with his spear. When nothing happened, Hailstorm explained that their parents chose for Hailstorm to win and told Hailstorm that he had to kill Winter with the spear. Realizing that his parents chose Hailstorm over him, Winter told Hailstorm that he should go back and tell everyone that he won while he waited until later to escape the caves, leaving the Ice Kingdom forever.
After Hailstorm left, Winter used his spear to unfreeze Foeslayer because he believed that her imprisonment was unfair. Foeslayer then told him the truth about her and Arctic, that they had fallen in love with each other. Winter dedicated that he wanted to get Foeslayer out of the Night Kingdom and used his frostbreath to destroy Foeslayer's enchanted shackles. Winter realized that Foeslayer knew where the lost city of night was and left the Ice Kingdom with her to return to Moon and the others.
Epilogue[]
Back at Jade Mountain Academy, Darkstalker listened to the thoughts of Mightyclaws who had received a letter that Fierceteeth and Strongwings escaped Thorn's prison. Mightyclaws was conflicted on if he would help them or if things were better now.
Darkstalker also watched Onyx who had removed her skyfire amulet to wade into a river. Darkstalker was surprised when she started to speak as there were no dragons around her. She explained that she could not get close to "the daughter" and that she had another idea. She described how there was a dragonet who was the daughter of one of Thorn's generals. She then thought to herself that one day, she would be queen, whether "that old dragon" helped her or not.
Darkstalker then listened into Anemone playing in one of the underground lakes. She thought to herself how she was finally free and that she was one of the most powerful dragons in the world. It is revealed that she used her magic to keep Coral away from her.
Finally, Darkstalker thought about Peril who was pacing an empty cave. He believed that she was the most interesting mind at the school and that she could change everything.
Variations from the Novel[]
- In the prologue, Ruby mentioned that Queen Scarlet was her mother[2] but in the novel, she only mentioned her mother and did not say Scarlet's name.[3]
- Scarlet's dialogue when Hailstorm first woke up about him being boring was cut and replaced with "So, this is Prince Hailstorm".[4]
- When remembering the time he had first disappointed his family, Winter only mentioned that Icicle and Hailstorm were in the hunting party,[5] leaving out two of Glacier's dragonets, one of his royal uncles, three attendants, and his parents.[6]
- There were only three RainWings who gathered at the RainWing royal pavilion when Glory called for her scout captains[7] instead of six.[8]
- The scene where Winter, Moon, Qibli, and Kinkajou hide from a search party while heading to the NightWing tunnel to the NightWing island was removed.[9]
- Instead of being in the Diamond Caves at the end of the novel, Winter and Foeslayer were flying outside.[10]
- The wording of the spell of the Pyrite mask is changed from "he or she" and "his or her"[11] to "they" and "their".[12]
Mistakes[]
- Arctic's blood was depicted as red, when it should be blue.[13]
- On Winter's neck, there is a moonglobe colored line.[14]
- On the paperback version, the title on the spine of the book is incorrectly spelled as "Winter Turniing." This was then corrected in later copies.
- The RainWing and NightWing dragonets' speech bubble is not colored in.[15]
- Tundra is missing her necklace in many panels.[16][17][18][19]
- When Winter sees the dragonets in the wingery, he thinks "Why are all the dragonets here NightWings?", but the RainWing dragonets did not have NightWing colors.[20]
- Queen Scarlet is missing her wings.[21]
- The spell on the Pyrite Mask is missing the words "in the form of", thus reading "when any dragon wears it a necklace".[12]
- In Darkstalker, Arctic cut out his tongue before his death; however, in the graphic novel, it was still intact when he was shown dead.[13]
- Qibli is missing his earring throughout the entire book.[22]
- Darkstalker is missing his teardrop scales.[13]
- Winter is missing his armband in several panels.[23][24]
- "Yeep!" is printed on Winter's leg.[25]
